Question Pattern in Exam: (I.a.) Write Three Words Pronounced with /i:/ sound.
Points to Remember:
1. English has 26 letters but 44 speech sounds known as phonemes.
2. A group of letters make a word in writing whereas a group of sounds make a word in speech.
3. Each sound or group of sounds for a word must be marked in writing in between two forward slanting lines. Example: eat = /i:t/
4. The sounds in English (44) are divided into three categories- a. Vowels (12),
b. Consonants(24), c. Diphthongs (8)
5. In the exam, as per syllabus, questions are asked based on only selective vowel sounds, not on all the forty four speech sounds.
The twelve vowel sounds in English are as follows:
